How To Maintain Your Tires And Keep Them Running Strong

733 × 550

Buying brand-new tires is an expensive investment and one that you'll want to take care of, especially because your tires are your only connection between you and whatever type of road on which you are travelling. Here are a few ways you can keep your tires in great shape:

  • Check Your Air Pressure - It's recommended to check your tires' air pressure monthly to ensure that it's not under-inflated or over-inflated. An under-inflated tire will lead to more wear on your tires, which will eventually mean you'll need to purchase a brand-new set much sooner, and will cost you more money in fuel because they have a higher rolling resistance. Over-inflated tires are easily punctured and could lead to a tire break.
  • Check Your Tread - In order to stay on track, your tires should have enough tread to effectively grip the road. While there are many ways you can check your tread, the most common is called the "Penny Test". Put a penny, with Abe's head down, into the tread. If any part of Lincoln's head is covered with your tread, you're fine. If the tread is below Lincoln's head, you'll need to purchase new tires.
  • Have Your Tires Rotated - Due to the way you drive, the roads you take, and how often you drive, not every tire wears evenly. In order to keep your tires all the same, it's recommended to have your tires rotated every 6,000 or 8,000-miles, or at every oil change.
  • Have Your Tires Aligned - Pot holes are the enemy of every vehicle and, if you've recently jammed your Audi car or SUV into one, you may want to have your tires aligned. A tire alignment will help keep your vehicle going straight, and not veering to one side, and will minimize wear and tear on your tires and improve your fuel economy.
